Welcome to the World Marko

It's hard to find the words to begin this post.  I keep tearing up at the thought of trying to put the last week and a half into some sort of written sense, so please forgive me if this is a little all over the place.

Marko arrived into the world at 9:11 p.m. on Saturday February 9, 2013, weighing 8 lbs 9 oz.  His arrival into the world was a long one, as I was officially in labour around 5 p.m. the day before, although I'd been having contractions off and on since earlier that afternoon.  My midwife had given me a verbena oil concoction (which I dubbed her "magic potion") to help bring on labour ... and it totally worked.  My water broke at 9 p.m. on Friday, at which point we left for the hospital as I had to be on antibiotics.  What followed seems like a blur now, and it's hard to believe that it was 30 hours between the onset of labour and the arrival of our little one.

I had originally planned to do everything all natural, no drugs, no epidural, no medical interventions.  (Hence, the "magic potion" -- I didn't want to be induced if I was too far overdue).  But Marko had other plans.  He was a little bit crooked and, despite my midwife and the amazing hospital team, they weren't able to turn him.   Add in a couple of other complications, and Marko was delivered by c-section.  The idea of a c-section had been terrifying (almost as much as the epidural itself ... I'm petrified of needles, and hated even having the prenatal blood work done), but I think it was mainly because I'd never had surgery before (aside from having my wisdom teeth removed).  The staff at the hospital were so incredibly amazing and supportive, and I really felt like I was in a room filled with love, as everyone played their role in keeping Marko and myself safe.  My husband was also amazing throughout the entire experience (as I always knew he would), and I really felt that he was my rock the whole way.

What an amazing little man Marko is.  He doesn't even seem like a newborn -- almost like he has an old soul.  He looks around him and really seems to see the world, making eye contact with those who are holding him, and he has such thoughtful little expressions on his face.  It's hard to believe that he's only been in my life for just over a week since it feels like he's always been our little son.  He's a really good baby too, hardly ever cries (unless he wants something, in which case his little sobs are just heartbreakingly adorable), and just last night slept for four consecutive hours (hooray!)

As I mentioned at the beginning of this post, it's hard to find the words to say much more, so I'll leave you with a few photos instead ... my heart is full to the point of bursting, and I can hardly wait for the adventures that each new day will bring.

My mom captioned this photo: That was the best all you can eat buffet EVER.

How can you NOT love that sweet sleepy smile?

One of his many quirky little facial expressions.

Already deep in thought ... definitely going to be a reader.

Me and Marko -- can't believe how much I love this little man already.
