The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer (and GIVEAWAY!) - Michelle Hodkin

Thanks for stopping by my blog today as part of Rainy Day Rambling's Something Wicked Comes.  There's been lots of great reviews, author interviews and giveaways going on this month as part of this spooktacular event, so be sure to stop over at Heidi's page and visit them all!

I chose to review Michelle Hodkin's The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer as my spooky book choice for this event.  I purchased this book about a year ago (and primarily because of the gorgeous cover) but it had sat unread on my shelf for months.  When Heidi asked me to join this event, I scoured my shelves looking for something spooky to read, but also so that I could check off a book on my already-owned TBR list.  Well, Mara Dyer was worth the wait.

Michelle Hodkin is a great writer -- the story was perfectly paced and it kept me hooked from the beginning right up until the shocking ending (I literally yelled out WHAT?!? when I reached the last page).  The opening paragraph of the book alone sets the stage for the story that will unfold, wherein Mara tells us that her name is a pseudonym, that it probably isn't safe for her to tell us her story, but that she needs to tell us about the murders so that we won't be next.  From that moment on, I hung on Mara's every word as she took me through the traumatic events that she'd been through.

As I mentioned earlier, the pacing of this story is perfect.  As a reader, you know that something's up with Mara and these "murders" that she keeps referring to, but the author feeds you small portions of the back story at a time, keeping the pacing perfectly timed.  There wasn't a moment where I felt the story lagging and just as I'd think that I may have started to figure things out, another piece of information would be revealed that had me wondering all over again.

Mara's a likeable character and a great narrator for the story.  I really enjoyed the relationship between her and Noah, a boy that she meets at school, and absolutely loved that this book stayed away from the dreaded love triangle that just seems to pop up in every single YA novel lately.  Plus, Mara has a really sweet relationship with her brothers too, which I found endearing.

If you're one of the few people that hasn't yet read this book, WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?  And you can WIN a copy of the book in my giveaway!  Please click on this link here to enter.  The giveaway is open internationally (as long as the Book Depository ships to you) and will run until October 31st.  Happy Hallowe'en!

P.S. In case you didn't already know, The Evolution of Mara Dyer, book two in this riveting trilogy, is out next week!  I will be buying a copy, that's for sure!
